What Is a PTA Welding System?
A PTA welding system is an automated hardfacing and cladding system based on plasma transferred arc technology. It uses a plasma arc as the heat source and alloy powder as the filler material. During the process, the alloy powder and a controlled layer of the substrate are melted together, forming a metallurgical bond after solidification.
PTA welding is widely used for wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant overlay applications. Compared with conventional manual welding, it offers better overlay formation, more controllable penetration, stronger bonding, higher coating density and easier automation.
For industrial users, the most important question is not only "what is PTA welding?" but also "which PTA welding system is suitable for my workpiece?" HALDEN designs PTA systems according to component shape, coating material, required hardness, cladding thickness, production volume and automation level.
Six Reasons to Choose
PTA for Hardfacing.
From metallurgical bonding to alloy powder flexibility -- PTA delivers dense, repeatable overlays where wear, corrosion and downtime matter most.
Metallurgical Bonding
PTA creates a fused bond between overlay and base metal -- strong adhesion and resistance to peeling under heavy-duty conditions.
Controlled Dilution
Heat input and penetration are precisely controlled -- preserving designed alloy chemistry and overlay performance.
Dense Overlay Layer
Stable hardness, smooth bead formation, reliable wear performance -- batch after batch.
Alloy Powder Ready
Cobalt-, nickel-, iron-based and tungsten-carbide composite powders -- selected per working condition.
Easy to Automate
Integrate with rotary tables, gantries, manipulators, positioners and PLC -- built for repeatable production.
Cost-Effective Thick Overlay
For thicker overlays and heavy-duty hardfacing, PTA is more economical than laser cladding without compromising bond quality.
