Cutting Pick
Plasma Hardfacing
Machine
Purpose-built PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) hardfacing system for cutting picks used in coal mining, tunnel boring, road planing, and trenching. Delivers consistent tungsten carbide deposit on the pick body -- extending service life by 3-5× under heavy abrasion and impact.
Engineered for
Cutting Pick Production.
The HALDEN Cutting Pick Plasma Hardfacing Machine is a dedicated automation cell for depositing tungsten carbide composite alloy onto the working surface of cutting picks. Twin-station configuration enables true continuous production -- one pick is loaded and unloaded while the other is welded -- delivering up to 120 picks per shift with repeatable deposit thickness, geometry, and metallurgical bond.
PLC-controlled torch oscillation, current ramp, and powder feed parameters are stored as recipes per pick model -- eliminating operator dependency and ensuring batch-to-batch consistency.
Shearer picks, continuous miner picks, longwall cutting drums.
Roadheader picks, TBM cutter heads, soft-rock excavation tools.
Asphalt milling teeth, cold planer drums, surface reclamation tools.
Trencher chains, foundation drilling teeth, cable plow picks.
Engineered Advantages
That Drive Pick Life.
Every subsystem -- plasma source, powder feed, motion, and control -- is selected and tuned for the specific challenges of cutting pick hardfacing.
Dual rotating fixtures alternate under one plasma torch. Continuous arc-on time approaches 90%, eliminating idle production losses.
Water-cooled transferred-arc plasma torch with constricted arc column delivers narrow heat-affected zone and minimal carbide degradation.
Touchscreen HMI stores parameters per pick model -- current, voltage, oscillation, powder rate. One-button recall for repeatable production.
Optional CCD camera centers the pick tip relative to the torch -- eliminating manual alignment and reducing setup time per batch.
Closed-loop volumetric powder feeder with ±2% accuracy. Synchronizes with current ramp to ensure uniform deposit at start and stop.
Field-validated tungsten carbide deposit extends cutting pick service life by 3 to 5 times compared with non-hardfaced picks under abrasive coal and rock conditions.

From Raw Pick
to Hardfaced Tool.
Operator loads raw pick into rotary chuck. Auto-clamping aligns the tip relative to the plasma torch.
PLC initiates argon flow, pilot arc transfer, and current ramp per stored recipe.
Synchronized rotation, oscillation, and powder feed deposit a uniform tungsten carbide layer on the pick body.
Controlled cooling cycle protects the deposit. Station rotates; finished pick is unloaded while the next is welded.
